Do you think it is a big deal for this to happen? Well, if you do, you are not the only one. You are talking about something that happens everyday in many schools across the country.
When one of your student is neglected in a way that seems to be unacceptable, your duty, as a teacher, is to report it. Otherwise, you are not doing part of your job which is supervising the welfare of that neglected student.
There are a number of solutions (in another post).
Answering Aida: you can start plants that can cover some of your food items. If you have a garden, plant bananas if you eat a lot of them; plant oranges, avocado, tomatoes, whatever you wish. Then gradually have an understanding and commitment with your neighbors: exchange trade.
This would be better in case one day you find yourself or your family being enslaved for you know who.
