Do you want to get paid in advance if you are to be the new author for a new outstanding novel?
Paying an advance for an author or a writer is a very right method to first gain the trust of both parties, then to test the validity of working with such a publisher.
Do you feel that this is too much to happen? Not at all, in fact it is very normal step that should be endorsed by all laws.
The normal action is usually based on previous experiences with other authors/writers. Having a contract with certain parties could be giving the wrong notion about one or the other.
Each writer could be easily stopped from writing if the publisher is unhappy about his/her work. It would be hard to obtain any rights unless there is a contract and an advance pay (whatever the amount) to cover the time s/he will spend in writing or editing or any other.

A publisher pays an author an advance,—a negotiable up-front payment, in contractual language—“against future royalties.” If you’re
not sure what “royalties” are, go dig into this article first.
If the majority of the authors insist on having an advance, this will be a new path facilitating all the wrongful negotiation when working with any new publisher.
